Why Should I Groom my Pet at Home?
Published date: 27 February 2024
Grooming is an essential part of pet ownership and regular grooming has many benefits:
- Reduces matting and knotting in the coat
- Will help circulate oils in the coat, making it shinier
- Reduces the chance of hairballs
- Keeps animals cool in the summer
When dogs and cats aren’t groomed it leads to itchiness, discomfort, hair in the eyes and overheating. Much like us regular grooming and trims make our pets feel fabulous.
Grooming and Health Checking
Regular grooming also allows owners to give their pet a nose to tail heath check. Getting hands on with your furry friend allows you to notice problems and potential health concerns.
Parasites such as ticks and fleas will be must easier to spot during brushing and pamper sessions. Skin issues like flakiness and redness will also be much more apparent during regular grooms.
Which brush do I need?
There are many brushes and grooming tools on the market. Some pets will require several tools and some will require only one. The key is understanding which grooming tool best suits your dog or cat’s coat.
How often should I groom my pet?
Groom daily to keep skin and coat in the best condition. All breeds will also benefit from a visit to a professional grooming salon. Regular salon visits are especially important for non-shedding breeds and those with thicker curlier coats such as Cockerpoos and Doodles.
Remember to introduce your pet to the grooming process when they are young. Play with their paws, use gentle tools on their coat and take them for an introductory grooming session. The more desensitised your puppy or kitten is, the easier it will be to groom them as they get older.
Remember diet plays a huge role in the condition of your pet’s coat. Alongside regular grooming and salon visits, ensure you are feeding a natural high quality diet.
