New Year’s Eve: How to Throw a Pet-Friendly Party

Published date: 03 December 2024

Party season is upon us! While some of us take the opportunity to relax over Christmas, there will be many owners who delight in hosting gatherings.

Parties are often not that thrilling for our pets, but don’t worry there are ways to make party season less stressful for our furry friends.

Lower The Volume

It wouldn’t be a party without some musical ambience. Unfortunately, our pets aren’t known for enjoying pop hits. Remember our dogs and cats have remarkable hearing, so that smooth jazz certainly won’t be pleasing to their ears.

Keep the volume lower to help your pets relax a little bit more.

Use Calming Treatments

The festive season is hectic for many of us, and the noise and the crowds certainly impact our pets too. Across those busy days, family gatherings and parties, our furry friends will need an additional source of support.

Calming products can be used ahead of time, to help take the edge off stressful events.

Invite Less Guests

Sometimes, the pressure is certainly on us to invite everyone from our closest family to our uncle’s best friend’s cousin.

However, keeping the numbers lower will not only make hosting easier, but it will also make the event a lot less worrying for our furry friends.

A smaller group of well-known people might help encourage your dog or cat to join in rather than hide away.

Hide the Festive Food

With all the laughter and music, it can be easy to miss your canine companion stealing some party food.

Many of the festive treats we enjoy are dangerous to our dogs and cats. So, make sure they are out of reach of pesky paws and snouts. Read our Christmas Safety Guide.

Instead, give your pet safe and appropriate snacks of their own. How about some soft calming McAdams treats?

Or for your feline friends some relaxing novel protein-packed titbits?

Create a Safe Den

Make sure your furry friend has a safe and relaxing place to retreat to if they decide to escape the party.

Cats will typically prefer hiding away somewhere high up, like on top of a wardrobe or cupboard.

Dogs will need a cosy supportive bed or a safe and secure crate to settle down in.

Avoid Fireworks

These will be difficult to escape from over the entirety of the festive period.

It is important to be prepared for fireworks, even if you aren’t planning on having fireworks yourself, the chances are there will be some in your neighbourhood. Watch our video for advice on Firework Season.

If you were considering having fireworks, it might be worth sticking to watching official events on the TV or the ones nearby. The chaos of New Year is enough for our furry friends to contend with!

I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve and a fabulous start to 2025.
