How to Choose a Puppy Breed

Published date: 03 October 2024

Deciding to bring a dog into your home is a huge step. Rescuing is a wonderful way to give a dog a second chance in a forever home. However, rescuing will not always be possible for some individuals and families.

For those looking to introduce a puppy into their hearts and homes, deciding on the best breed can be overwhelming. It can be tempting to base your decision on how the dog looks, after all, we all have our favourite breeds. The trouble is not all dogs are created equally!

Our canine companions come in all shapes and sizes and the cost, care and time needed for each breed will differ greatly. To help find the perfect breed for you and your family, here are five questions to consider.

Is this your first dog?

Being a puppy parent is heart-warming but can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time. If the whole experience is new, it is worthwhile choosing a dog breed that is known for being easier to train.

Breeds such as Labradors, Collies, Golden Retrievers and Dobermans are known for their intelligence, focus and eagerness to please their owners. Of course, there is much more to consider when choosing a puppy, but it is worth keeping ease of training in mind.

How much time do I have each day for walks?

Every dog needs their walkies. Daily walking allows our furry friends to stretch their paws, exercise, play and discover some new and exciting scents. What is important to consider when choosing a puppy breed, is how much exercise that breed typically requires.

Some dog breeds will need a LOT more exercise than others. Breeds such as Huskies, Collies and Spaniels can have high energy needs, so you should be able to provide at least twice daily walks once they reach adulthood.

If dogs aren’t given enough exercise, this can lead to boredom, which in turn results in destructive behaviour. Chewing furniture, excessive barking and even overgrooming can be the result of a dog that just needs more time to play and interact with you and the world.

Do you have any other pets?

There is great fun and fulfilment to be had in owning multiple species of animal. A puppy of course can bond and learn to live peacefully alongside other pets. However, it is worth being aware of the breeds that might be less likely to get along with smaller animals.

Breeds such as the Weimaraner and Greyhounds might be more inclined to chase smaller animals, so keep your pets’ safety in mind when choosing a dog breed.

How much grooming do you have time for?

Super fluffy breeds are adorable and certainly work well for those owners who have the time to maintain them. Before purchasing a thick, long, or coarse-haired puppy, it is worth researching their grooming needs.

Thicker and longer coated breeds will require daily at-home brushing, alongside professional grooming. Do you have the time to thoroughly brush your pet every day? Remember the more complicated the coat, the more time and money required to keep their fur healthy.

How much can you afford? Owning a dog is expensive, whether they be a Chihuahua or a German Shepherd. The cost of a dog across their lifetime can be anywhere from £15,000 to over £30000!

Larger dogs will cost more to feed, and dogs with coarse or wiry coats will be expensive to maintain. For more detailed support on finding the perfect breed head over to Best Pet For Me.
