How Often Should I Take My Dog to the Groomers?

Published date: 29 February 2024

Every dog will benefit from professional grooming; however many owners are unsure how often they really need to go.

How often you take your dog to the groomers will depend on their breed.

Smooth and Short Coats

Despite having shorter coats these breeds can still shed a fair amount so will benefit from both at home and professional grooming.

Aim for regular grooming sessions at home and bring your smooth or short-coated dog into the salon every 3 months.

Our Dogwood Natural Spas provide many treatments alongside grooming to help keep every dog in the very best condition.

Pets with shorter coats will need gentler tools such as Grooming Gloves when brushing at home. Examples of short, coated breeds include Pugs, Staffordshire Terriers, French Bulldogs, Whippets and Greyhounds.

Medium Coats

It is important to keep on top of grooming medium breeds to reduce the potential for matting. Medium length coats with hair that is only an inch or so long can unfortunately still matt.

Aim to bring these breeds in for a spa visit every 8-10 weeks.

Examples of medium-coated breeds include Labradors and Corgis.

Thick and Double Coats

These breeds require regular grooming, otherwise they will suffer from heavy uncomfortable matting.

These breeds should come in for a professional groom every 6-8 weeks.

Some examples of double or thick-coated breeds include German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Huskies, and Pomeranians.

Long Coats

Long-haired pets require delicate grooming and multiple tools will typically be needed for grooming at home. Such as Anti Tangle Combs, Rakes and Slicker Brushes.

Breeds with Long Coats should ideally be professionally groomed every 8-12 weeks.

Examples of long-haired breeds include Yorkies, Afghans, Lhasa Apsos and Persians.

Coarse and Wire Coats

These breeds require regular grooming and will benefit from regular salon visits. Typically, these breeds will need professional grooming every 6-12 weeks depending on fur length.

These are some examples of wire-coated breeds: West Highland Terriers, Border Terriers and Wire-Haired Dachshunds.

Curly Coats

Doodles are one of the most popular breeds and their curly coats require a lot of attention both at home and professionally.

Golden Doodles, Cockerpoos, Cavapoos and Labradoodles require regular help, so should be groomed professionally every 6-8 weeks.
